SMART inconsistent?

SMART society is not so smart when it comes to being consistent. On your “Challenge” page you print the words from John Lennon’s Imagine, “Imagine there’s no countries…” like that’s a good thing, but in the members’ forum page under “things we can all do to help speed up the end of religion” you suggest changes to the wording in the Canadian national anthem. If there are no countries what’s the point in having national anthems?

The whole verse in the song Imagine reads: “Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.” With over 6 billion people in the world we think it makes sense to have some boundaries, even if just for administrative purposes. Surely in the song “Imagine” John Lennon was highlighting the evil of chest-beating nationalism, the kind that makes people march enthusiastically into war believing that God is on their country's side. If you could eliminate that kind of delusional thinking, AND all organized religion, what a peaceful world it would be!

SMART’s suggestion of changing the wording of the Canadian National Anthem is not an endorsement of nationalism, it is a pragmatic approach to the problem of eliminating religion. SMART has no magic wand. We can’t create the peaceful world in “Imagine” overnight. The process will undoubtedly be gradual. Removing all references to a God or religion in all national anthems is a good first step in the right direction.
