Religious people! How much thought do you give to religions other than your own? Probably not much - and why should you? Isn’t it true that all those other religions are false? The big problem here is that all over the world billions of people who are members of those other religions are all convinced that your religion is false! If you believe that followers of false religions will go to hell after they die, isn’t it essential that you ensure your religion really is the one true one, the only one doing God’s will? Given the huge number of false religions isn’t it logical that your God would expect, or even demand, that you use your (God given?) powers of reasoning to ensure you are not being tricked by Satan the devil? Surely God does not approve of people who follow a particular religion just because they were raised in it or because they were recruited at a vulnerable time in their lives? Maybe you are amongst those who claim that God loves all religious people and it doesn’t matter which religion you belong to. But where is your evidence for believing this? In your religion’s holy book where does it say that all religions are okay? Doesn’t your holy book specifically warn against following false religions? SMART society challenges you: If you believe there is a creator of the universe and that He has a "will" for human beings embodied in the teachings of your religion then we say it is incumbent on you to check the validity of those teachings! You could begin this process by looking into some of the beliefs of other religions and comparing them to your own. Here are a few questions to get you started: Ask Mormons why they think that God forbids you to drink tea or coffee. Ask Methodists why they think that God allows tea and coffee but doesn’t allow alcohol. Ask Hindus why they think that when a girl has her first menstrual period God wants her put in a darkened room for 3 days. Ask Orthodox Jews why they think that during the festival of Sukkot God doesn’t want you to tear toilet paper off the roll. Ask Christian Scientists why they think that when you are sick God doesn’t want you to see a doctor. Ask Seventh Day Adventists why they think that God doesn’t want you to dance a waltz, go to the theatre, or to read newspapers. Ask Sikh fundamentalists why they think that God forbids you to eat sitting at a table in your church (but on the floor is okay). Ask Jehovah’s Witnesses why they think that God allows birth control but doesn’t allow oral sex. Ask Roman Catholics why they think that God allows oral sex but doesn’t allow birth control. Ask Muslims why they believe that God thinks men are "a degree above" women. Ask Shi-ite Muslims why they think that God wants adulterous women to be stoned to death (but not adulterous men). We could easily fill a whole book with questions like these, but how many of them does anyone need to ask before they come to the realization that all the silly rules and regulations in every religion come from inside the minds of (mostly primitive) men. To ascribe any of these rules to the alleged creator of a 28 billion light-year diameter universe surely insults the intelligence of that creator. It is not that all religions apart from yours are false, all religions are false! Facing up to the fact that for maybe many years you have lived a lie and been deceived by self-serving religious leaders is incredibly difficult, and for some people, impossible! How much easier it is to relax and just accept the wisdom and knowledge of your religious leaders. By doing that this challenge can be dismissed as yet one more trick by Satan! But usually doing the right thing is not easy. If you are a religious person and you acknowledge the logic of even some of what you have just read, you really only have two choices regarding your religious faith: 1, You can dismiss this challenge and immerse yourself in your faith i.e. abandon rational enquiry and healthy scepticism. You can clasp your rosary or cross or holy book, gaze heavenward and talk to your God. You can take comfort in the certainty that when you die your faith will win you a: reincarnation, or an afterlife in heaven, or an eternal life on a paradise Earth (depending on your religion) or…. 2, You can declare yourself cured of what Freud described as the "neurosis" called religion! You can spit out the soother you’ve been sucking on all these years. Hold your head high. You are not a sinner! Celebrate your incredible luck at being born a human being and hopefully having at least a few years to experience this wonderful world we live in. Religion devalues human life terribly, reducing it to a mere test, a preparation for some kind of reward after death if you adhere to all the rules and regulations of your particular religion. With this manipulative fiction swept from your mind you can truly appreciate how precious every moment of your life is. Help other religious people experience the same awakening that you have. Show them how it is possible to be a good person and lead a fulfilled life without relying on any “holy” book, religious leader or alleged super-power up in the sky. Challenge them to examine this website and refute its logic. Imagine there’s no heaven Imagine there’s no countries You may say I’m a dreamer (John Lennon, 1971) |
