Our Place in the Universe

Four hundred years ago when Galileo dared to suggest that the Earth went round the sun, contradicting conventional thinking that the sun went round the Earth, Catholic church leaders, including the Pope, pronounced him a heretic and had him placed under house arrest till the day he died! At that time, people actually believed that twinkling stars were people in heaven! There was so much they didn’t understand. Belief in God enabled them to make some sense of the world around them.

But now we know a lot more about our world. We know that Earth is a tiny planet revolving around one of the millions of stars in our galaxy. And our milky way galaxy is one of many billions (that we can see) spread over a universe estimated at approximately 28 billion light years in diameter! This is mind boggling for us today. It would have been totally beyond the comprehension of anyone who lived 400 years ago.

As our knowledge of the universe increases our place in it becomes less and less significant. It also becomes more and more incredible that some intelligent being created it (in six days?!) and then decided to involve himself in our affairs, using us as pawns in a continuing argument with one of his errant angels, Satan.

Religious people have a skewed and grossly inflated sense of their own importance. To believe that the creator of this immense universe could possibly be interested in your life must be the ultimate delusion of grandeur!
