Luck

It seems to be a rule that the more fanatically religious a person is, the less he is inclined to believe in the law of averages or luck.

Religious people are constantly seeking reassurance that their “parent” in the sky is looking after them. So when something happens like, for instance, a motor vehicle accident where someone narrowly escapes death, the religious person is likely to attribute that escape to an intervention by God. Of course, this begs the question, if God so wanted this person to survive that He intervened to save him, why did He allow the crash to happen in the first place? Religious people dismiss this question with irritation. Nothing is allowed to disturb their fantasy of a God who is looking after them. If the crash victim dies then of course they have another answer: “It was his time”, or “God wanted him in heaven.”

SMART people have a different explanation: The first person was lucky and the second person wasn’t.
